U17 ECNL White Team Falls Short in Finals of Showcase Cup A

The U17 FC Stars ECNL White team suffered a 2-0 loss to Sting Austin in the Showcase Cup A Final in Monday’s headline match of the ECNL Girls National Playoffs.

“Congratulations to Sting, their girls played really well and were deserving of the win,” said Head Coach Shawn McDonough. “Credit to our players who had a rough start but rebounded well and were unfortunate not to pull at least one back.”

The U17 ECNL White team had to get through plenty of obstacles just to reach this stage of the Cup. They narrowly escaped Midwest FC in the Round of 16 2-1, then got matched up with #1 overall seed Colorado Rapids. A narrow 1-0 over the favorites sent Stars to the semi-finals, where Mustang FC awaited. Stars showed out against a team they had lost to earlier in the season, winning 4-1 to advance to Monday’s final.

“Big picture, this is an unbelievable experience for the girls,” said McDonough about his team’s week in Washington. “(They) will without a doubt be remembered as an experience of a lifetime.”

Later in the day, the U13 FC Stars ECNL Blue team (pictured below) made sure to leave Redmond with a win, defeating the NC Courage 2-1. Head Coach Ricky Newton was proud of how his group was able to execute the game plan from the early stages of the match.

“The team set up to press very high today and in the heat it was important to get an early lead,” he said. “We found ourselves two zero up early on. That settled any nerves and we played full of confidence for the remainder of the game.”

FC Stars placed third in Group B, going 1-0-2 in their three games. It was the team’s first national competition as a group, an experience that Newton says will go a long way for the team’s future.

“The 2009 girls have been excellent this season and it was a great way to end a very positive year,” he said. “We have gained real experience this weekend at our first national playoff event. We know the standard of the ECNL nationally, and that will be our motivation for next season.”

Only one FC Stars team remains in the field at the 2022 ECNL Girls National Playoffs: the U15 ECNL Blue team. They topped Group I of the Champions League Division, and play tomorrow in the Round of 16 vs. PDA Blue.
