This year at Soccer-Thon we held an equipment drive for the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service, they run a program called "Heart and Minds", a community approach to policing in some of the most violent neighborhoods in T&T. The program is run and staffed entirely by the TTPS. They organize the youths into local cross-neighborhood soccer leagues (many of these neighborhoods are involved in drug and turf wars, the kids wouldn't otherwise be even allowed to associate with each other, or cross well defined "borders"), and forming full teams who play against other teams from across the islands. The officers also do the coaching.
The officers will aim to use the equipment from Soccer-Thon to start a much needed girls program in those neighborhoods. They are hoping to start a league.
These kids have big dreams, but face unimaginable adversity in even trying to play regularly, and rarely are afforded a safe environment to simply play the beautiful game.
THANK YOU for helping support such a great project.
